A question we often get is how much compost does it take to topdress a lawn ? Obviously that depends on how big the lawn is and how deep you want to spread. If you spread at a 1/4” depth you will need approximately 3/4 of a cubic yd for each 1000 square feet. This depth is fairly common. If you want to spread a 1/2” depth it would be double that or about 1 1/2 cu. yards per 1000 sq. ft. Most of the people we talk to are spreading 1/4”. Be careful not to go over 1/2” on existing turf. More is not necessarily better and may even have an adverse affect. Contractors tell us they are spreading, for the most part, between 6 to 9 cubic yards on a typical lawn. We hope this information is helpful.
