August is the time to begin attacking thatch in you turf. Thatch is a build up of roots and stems derived from turfgrass. Thatch can create problems in turf because it creates an environment for diseases and pests in the thatch layer. To help alleviate this problem aeration and topdressing are the best answer. The aeration, either core type or linear aeration, helps open up the thatch and topdressing, up to 1/4 inch, with a good quality compost adds beneficial microorganisms that help break down the thatch layer. Have a great Labor Day weekend.
