Many times customer ask me how long can I spread compost in the fall. The real answer is until the ground freezes but I generally say until December if you live in cold climates. Obviously there are warm parts of the country where you could spread all the way from fall until May or June. I would stay off the turf in the really hot months. Compost is always best when combined with core aeration and core aeration is always best when there is adequate ground moisture so you can penetrate the soil and pull a decent size plug. We know adding good quality organic matter improves the soil so what are you waiting for there is still time left.
